Data Collection

It's Only Natural

Bees are going to buzz,
Birds are going to fly,
Scientists are going to collect data points
and present them in graph form!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Welcome to the behind the scenes look at some of the data we've collected this growing season. Over the years we have tried several methods for seed starting, and we're starting to dial in what works and doesn't work for us in our environment. To help us learn more about how our plants growth in various conditions, we use several small SwitchBots which measure temperature and humidity within each of our different grow setups throughout the year.

Recently I discovered a free handy phone app called "Lux Light Meter Pro" which turns my phone into a photometer! That has been a game changer!

2022 Seedling Starts in Growth Chamber Bot #1A - Month View

This year I held off on starting seeds until later in the spring.  Looking at weather patterns and recent outdoor temperatures, it was best to hold off until April 6th to get started.  Heating mats help to regulate the temperature within the growth chamber, however, the ambient temperature in the cool basement does cause daily temperature and humidity cycles.

A closer zoom into the data over the past week shows more details to consider for tasks that occur throughout the week.

A beautiful graph showing far greater detail.  The sudden dip in temps and humidity?  The growth chamber was open as I inspected plants, watered the trays, and raised the grow lights another couple of inches.
